Internal Systems and Web site Redevelopment for APPMA
In 2003, APPMA was faced with an association data management system and Web site that were inadequate for its growing needs and not flexible enough to transition into more useable tools. The association needed to better capture information from and disseminate information to its member base.
Background: In 2003, APPMA was faced with an association data management system and Web site that were inadequate for its growing needs and not flexible enough to transition into more useable tools. The association needed to better capture information from and disseminate information to its member base.
Primary goal: APPMA needed to acquire new association management and Web site software to achieve its goals while managing its signature annual tradeshow. The tradeshow, around which the association was originally built, is the industry standard pet product manufacturer show in the United States. New tools were needed to showcase the companies that attended and exhibited.
Solution: NetComm developed a three-pronged solution to address APPMA's core needs, and provide a flexible and powerful environment for managing its core information for years to come.
Results:
1. NetComm created the APPMA association Web site to disseminate important news, product information, and legal information compiled for the industry by APPMA. Members can now access and manage their core account information, including the management of company and contact information, site access credentials, products, and dues payment. The public site makes extensive use of page templates and CSS, so that the creation and management of all elements of the site-the page, navigation, layout, location, and images-are handled by APPMA, generally without the need for a Web site developer. The look and feel, color, and imagery follow APPMA marketing requirements, while the site is easy to use by an audience that isn't highly technical.
2. The Global Pet Expo annual tradeshow Web site was created as a separate entity for branding purposes, and is immediately recognized as an industry standard within the pet product manufacturing community. Like the association site, all information is managed by the central administration software, including site architecture and navigation, as well as exhibitor, floor plan, and marketing information. The layout of the site follows the annual theme of the tradeshow.
3. NetComm developed software to enable management and reporting of all member, tradeshow, and buyer information, as well as the general content and site architecture elements found on both public Web sites. This comprehensive online system allows the association to manage all information pertaining to members, buyers, the tradeshow, and other information to APPMA managers and vendors in any location. Web forms used on both the association and tradeshow sites capture information from members, buyers, and the general public into the system for a wide variety of purposes, including self management of account information and online event registration.
This central software has become the core of APPMA's business, and has grown since its initial launch to include much more-including a legal library, dynamic online form-builder, a tradeshow booth map management utility, and online reporting center where custom reports on any data found in the system may be generated as needed.
Even more importantly, this management system has given APPMA the ability to capture and disseminate core information more quickly; shifted the burden of information management to members and buyers instead of APPMA staff; and lessened (in some cases, eliminated) the need for paper-based management of many in-house business processes. The software continues to be updated and modified as needs arise and change.
